By Road – Most Common Option
you can self drive to Lake Nakuru is about 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital.
- Travel Time: Approximately 2 to 3 hours by car, depending on traffic and weather conditions.
- Route:
- From Nairobi, take the A104 highway (Nairobi–Nakuru Road) via Naivasha.
- The main park gate (Lanet Gate) is located just a few kilometers from Nakuru town.
- Alternative gates include Nderit Gate (south) and Main Gate (east), depending on where you’re coming from.
Note: The roads are generally in good condition, but a 4×4 vehicle is recommended during the rainy season.
By Air – Quick but Costlier
You can reach Lake Nakuru by domestic flight for a quicker and more scenic option.
- Flight Duration: About 30 minutes from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport.
- Nearest Airstrip: Naishi Airstrip, located within the park (used mainly by chartered flights).
- Several tour companies and private charters operate flights, ideal for luxury or time-sensitive travelers.
By Public Transport (Not Recommended for Safaris)
- Public buses and matatus (shared minibuses) run between Nairobi and Nakuru town.
- From Nakuru town, one would need a private taxi or tour operator to access the park.
