Meru National Park

Meru National Park – Wild, Remote, and Born Free

Meru National Park,  Meru National Park is one of Kenya’s hidden safari gems — remote, rugged, and refreshingly unspoiled. Tucked away in the eastern foothills of Mount Kenya, Meru offers a raw wilderness experience far from the busier tourist routes.

The park gained international fame through the story of George and Joy Adamson, whose pioneering work with lions inspired Meru National Parkthe beloved book and film “Born Free”. It was here that they released the lioness Elsa back into the wild, and where Joy Adamson’s ashes were scattered — a moving site that visitors can still visit today.

Though smaller by Kenyan standards, Meru is rich in biodiversity, offering visitors the chance to see an impressive variety of wildlife including elephants, lions, cheetahs, leopards, Grevy’s zebras, buffalos, and both black and white rhinos. The park is also known for its abundant rivers and streams, which nourish lush vegetation and attract numerous bird species, making it a favorite for birdwatchers.

With fewer crowds, stunning scenery, and a strong conservation legacy, Meru offers a truly authentic safari experience — perfect for those seeking solitude, storytelling, and raw natural beauty.
