Samburu National Park,  Samburu National Park is located in the hot, arid northern region of Kenya, approximately 325 kilometers (202 miles) from Nairobi and about 90 kilometers (56 miles) north of Mount Kenya. The park spans an area of 165 square kilometers. The Ewaso Ng’iro River, which originates in the Aberdare Mountains, flows through the park, providing a vital and permanent water source that sustains the region’s wildlife and lush vegetation.Samburu National Park

While the wildlife experience in Samburu may not be as diverse or dense as in some of the southern parks, the park’s scenic beauty more than compensates for this. Thanks to the consistent presence of water, the riverbanks are lined with rich riverine woodland vegetation. The landscape also includes acacia woodlands, bushland, grassland, and scrubland, contributing to its unique ecological diversity.

Samburu is especially known for being home to several rare and endemic species, often referred to as the “Samburu Special Five”. These include the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx—species that are primarily found north of the equator. The park is also renowned for its diverse and abundant bird life.

Crocodiles are frequently spotted basking along the sandy banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River, often at every bend. Further downstream, where permanent pools form, hippos are a common sight. Elephants roam freely throughout the scrubland, often cooling off or drinking from the shallow waters of the river. Unfortunately, rhinoceroses no longer exist in the reserve due to historic poaching.

Getting There

Samburu National Park is accessible both by road and by air.

By road, the journey from Nairobi takes approximately 6 hours, offering a scenic and educational drive through the Kenyan countryside. While lengthy, this overland route provides a great opportunity to experience the diverse landscapes and rural life gx land cruiserof Kenya along the way.

By air, there are three airstrips in or near the park that receive daily—and sometimes twice daily—flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi. These scheduled flights provide a convenient and time-saving option and also connect well with other popular game reserves such as Lewa Downs, Meru National Park, and the Masai Mara, making Samburu a perfect inclusion in a multi-destination safari across Kenya.
