The Wildlife
During the dry season, the concentration of wildlife around the Tarangire River rivals that of the Ngorongoro Crater in both diversity and reliability. However, the ecosystem here is shaped by a localized migration pattern, followed by most of the game that resides in and around the park. As a result, while Tarangire is outstanding during the peak months, wildlife sightings can 
be less predictable during the off-season, this park can be easily combined with Amboseli .
Elephants are the park’s main attraction, with up to 3,000 individuals gathering during the height of the dry season. This time also brings impressive numbers of wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, and buffalo, along with Thomson’s gazelle, greater and lesser kudu, eland, leopards, and cheetahs.
Among the rarest and most sought-after sightings in Tarangire are the dwarf mongoose, oryx, and gerenuk—though these elusive species are rarely seen.
In addition to its mammals, Tarangire is considered one of Tanzania’s top birding destinations, with a remarkable diversity of species that makes it a paradise for bird enthusiasts.
Activities in Tarangire National Park
Game drives are the primary activity in Tarangire National Park, offering excellent opportunities to explore the park’s diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife. However, staying at camps or lodges located just outside the park opens up additional experiences, including guided walking safaris and night game drives—activities that are not typically permitted within the park boundaries.
While there are no boat safaris available on Tarangire’s rivers, more adventurous options are available for those seeking a unique experience. Oliver’s Camp, for example, offers exceptional walking safaris and fly camping excursions, allowing guests to immerse themselves fully in the wilderness. Both Oliver’s Camp and Swala Camp have also recently begun offering night safaris within the park itself, providing a rare chance to observe nocturnal wildlife.

When to visit
Game viewing from July through October is exceptional, as wildlife gathers in large numbers around the remaining water sources. However, during the rest of the year, most animals migrate out of the park to the Rift Valley floor and the grazing grounds of the Maasai Steppe.
As a result, visitors should not expect high concentrations of game during the off-season months. Nonetheless, we still recommend visiting Tarangire during this time for those seeking a quieter experience and a chance to avoid the crowds.
Best Time to Visit Tarangire National Park
The best time to visit Tarangire is during the dry season, from June to October, when game viewing is at its peak. During these months, animals gather around limited water sources, making wildlife sightings more abundant and reliable.
From December to March, the area experiences a high presence of tse-tse flies, which can be quite bothersome. While this period is ideal for witnessing the wildebeest calving season in the Serengeti, it is generally best to avoid Tarangire during these months.
How to Reach Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park is conveniently accessible from Arusha by self drive or with chauffeur which is the main gateway city 
for northern Tanzania safaris. The park lies approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of Arusha, and the drive typically takes around 2 to 3 hours, depending on road conditions.
Most visitors travel to Tarangire by road, either in private safari vehicles or as part of organized tours. The journey takes you through scenic landscapes and small Maasai villages, offering a glimpse into the region’s culture along the way.
Alternatively, for those seeking a quicker option, there is a small airstrip near the park at Manyara Airstrip, which serves charter flights from Arusha and other nearby towns. From the airstrip, it’s a short drive to the park entrance.
