Detailed Itinerary#Ultimate guide to navigating Kenya’s wild side

1: Arrive in Nairobi City, drive to Nairobi National Park.

Welcome to Nairobi! NBO is Kenya’s largest and Capital City, and boasts of culture, history, and vigor. Interestingly, outside the Nairobi Capital, even more wonders await. You don’t have to waste any second because from the time you set foot at the Airport, you will pick up a rental car and head straight for a self-drive road trip.

You will be heading south for approximately 7 kilometers to Nairobi National Park. This 11700-hectare Protected Area is known for its 100 mammal species and over 400 bird species. Once here, you will check in to your accommodation and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure, relaxing and taking a short self-drive safari to tick off some wildlife species.

Day 2: Half-day scenic drive from Nairobi City to Amboseli National Park

Today is your official first day exploring Kenya, and there’s no better place for it than Amboseli National Park. This 39200-hectare Protected Area is home to breathtaking natural beauty, including the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. The three to four-hour journey from Nairobi provides views of the countryside and Lake Amboseli, among others.

You will see the outstanding Ol Tukai woodland area, Mount Kilimanjaro views, Lake Amboseli, and Observation Hill. On getting there, you will embark on a self-drive tour with incredible sights of African bush elephants, Masai giraffes, zebras, gazelles, Cape buffaloes, and wildebeests, among others. After the self-drive tour, you will head to your accommodation.

Day 3: Drive to Tsavo West National Park

Pick up your rental car and make the 4-hour drive from Amboseli National Park to Tsavo West National Park. The route to this hilly Protected Area takes you along the lush oases like Mzima Springs and rocky outcrops, and unmatched natural beauty.

Upon arrival, you will check in at your accommodation and make use of the Lodge facilities (if available), or have the remainder of the day free to relax and get settled. Afterwards, go for a guided walk around the Lodge on foot or head out for a self-guided drive with a local Park Ranger.

Day 4&5: Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks adventures

After an early wake-up call, hop in the 4WD rental car and head to any of the Amboseli gates. It is guaranteed to be thrilling because this National Park has one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife. From your elevated position in the open-roofed 4X4 Safari vehicle, you will take in the perfect vantage point to take photos. There’s no rush, as you have the entire day for wildlife spotting and sighting exotic bird species. Accompanying you on this self-drive safari will be an expert Ranger guide who will take you to the wildlife-rich areas to search for the elusive leopards lounging in acacia trees, and catch a glimpse of the elusive black rhino alongside zebras, African wild dogs, impalas, cheetahs, buffaloes, and others.

After this self-drive safari, drop the Ranger guide at the Park gate and proceed to Tsavo East National Park. From the gate, make your way to the Safari Lodge/or Camp booked for one night in this Park. Continue for wildlife spotting through the endless plains where red-dust elephants freely roam. Enjoy a scenic self-drive safari along the Galana River while watching hippos and crocodiles sunbathing, while the African fish eagles fly overhead.

Day 6: Drive to Masai Mara National Reserve, self-safari

Be up early for the first of three days on self-drives through the Masai Mara National Reserve. Spanning 1510 square kilometers across the southwest of the country, this is one of the most unmissable places during African safaris. The Park has many entry cheetahgates to choose from, and on entry, you will clear entry and conservation fees, register the rental car, and then make your way to the Safar Lodge.

Even driving to the Lodge is a mini safari in itself, as you will undeniably be treated to sightings of the Big Five Game- leopards, Rhinos, buffaloes, lions, and African bush elephants, wildebeests, giraffes, and others along the way. Once checked at your accommodation, you will have the remainder of the day to rest and get settled.

Day 7&8: Masai Mara self-guided safaris

The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Africa’s most explored safari destinations for a good reason. First, this Protected Area is home to over 100 species of mammals and about 500 bird species. Over the next two days, you will enjoy the self-drive to spot as many of these spectacular creatures as possible.

If you visit during the perfect season, you might be lucky to experience the Great annual Migration, involving millions of wildebeests accompanied by hundreds of thousands of gazelles and zebras from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. The epic moment of this movement is the opportunity for migrating animals to cross the crocodile-filled Mara River. Enjoy a picnic lunch, and when the day is gone, return to the Lodge in time for a sundowner and dinner.

Day 9&10: Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park

Over the next two days, wake up early to enjoy the abundant wildlife and birdlife in Lake Naivasha, a freshwater oasis surrounded by birdlife and Hell’s Gate National Park. While in the Lake Naivasha area, enjoy a boat ride to see different bird black rhinospecies and hippos up close.

Leaving Lake Naivasha behind, you will drive to Hell’s Gate National Park to see several species that include Klipspringers, elands, zebras, Hyraxes, gazelle, and hartebeests. Leave the rental car and grab a bicycle to ride through the stunning landscapes- gorges, towering cliffs, and others.

Day 11: Self-drive to Nairobi, optional activities

In the morning, continue your exploration of Kenya with a 2.5-hour drive to Nairobi City. Upon arrival, feel free to kick back, relax, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the City. Later, spend the remainder of the day exploring Nairobi City on your own.

Day 12: Depart Nairobi.

Alas, today is the day you depart Kenya. At the appropriate time, you will transfer to the Airport for your flight home. Safe Travels!
